Construction Partnering

Partnering in the construction industry is an approach to organize project communications and coordination between parties so as to improve project safety, quality, and profitability while reducing time delays, costs, conflict, and exposure to litigation.

Partnering sessions are used to document project requirements, define project goals and objectives, understand client expectations, confirm levels of authority, and validate essential procedures.  To be effective over the course of a project, partnering sessions should be conduct on an ongoing basis as the project advances.  Partnering sessions also present opportunities for the parties to sit down with one another to address problems and issues that are not resolved in the everyday course of day-to-day business.

Ms. Boucher's approach to conducting a partnering session for a construction project, especially for the initial partnering session, is three-fold.

First, she conducts a telephone survey interview (one with each party)  to provide each the opportunity to clarify what they would like to get out of the partnering session and to express any issues and concerns to a neutral third party in an atmosphere of confidentiality.  The data gathered through this interview makes it possible for Ms. Boucher to tailor the partnering session to meet the unique needs and interests of the particular project at that particular phase of the project.  Taking into account the results of these interviews, Ms. Boucher then prepares and provides  a draft agenda tailored to meet the needs and phase of the particular project.  This is reviewed with the principals during a joint conference call.  Subsequently, Ms. Boucher incorporates changes as discussed and finalizes and distributes a final agenda.  Second, she facilitates the partnering session.  At the partnering session, she leads introductions, establishes meeting ground rules, monitors the agenda, monitors discussion timelines, encourages participation from all attendees, organizes both small and large group discussions, helps participants understand different points of view to find areas of agreement, and records agreements, action items, and other information.  Third, she prepares and provides participants with documentation of the partnering session in a report that includes all partnering documents developed or revised during the partnering session, an Executive Summary, illustrations and exhibits developed by participants, action items, photos of group activities, participant contact information, any training materials, and written recommendations.
